Elevate your clinical expertise with this one-day, advanced course designed specifically for Physical Therapists, PT Residents and PT Fellows-in-Training. Deepen your understanding of manual therapy for the cervical spine through a contemporary biopsychosocial and patient-centered lens. Explore the latest definition of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (OMPT) as well as manual therapy mechanisms and how they translate into practice. Hands-on lab sessions and case-based learning will help refine your ability to integrate manual therapy with targeted exercise and sound clinical reasoning.
Through dynamic lectures, hands-on lab sessions, and case-based learning, you’ll gain the skills and confidence to:
- Conduct comprehensive cervical spine examinations.
- Apply evidence-informed manual therapy techniques safely and effectively.
- Integrate medical screening and clinical reasoning into your treatment approach.
- Design personalized exercise programs that enhance patient recovery and long-term outcomes.
Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course the participants will be able to:
- Synthesize neurophysiological, biomechanical, and biopsychosocial mechanisms to explain the effects of manual therapy and inform comprehensive treatment planning for cervical pain.
- Critically evaluate complex patient presentations to determine precise indications, contraindications, and precautions for cervical manual therapy.
- Employ patient-centered communication strategies that effectively address pain beliefs, fears, and expectations to foster a collaborative alliance.
- Formulate evidence-informed clinical reasoning by integrating all examination findings (subjective history, regional neurological exam, and special tests) for patients with neck pain.
- Competently and safely execute High-Velocity Low-Amplitude (HVLA) manipulation and mobilization techniques for the cervical and thoracic spine, using appropriate psychomotor skills and clinical reasoning.
- Design and utilize the test-retest procedure following intervention to ensure clinical decisions are objective and align with the patient's measurable response.
- Design and implement individualized, progressive active exercise programs that complement manual therapy, reinforce neurophysiologic effects, and empower patients for long-term self-management.
- Effectively sequence manual therapy, exercise, and education and modify intervention dosage based on patient tolerance, irritability, and functional goals.
- Apply all learned principles through case-based learning, self-reflection, and constructive feedback to continuously refine clinical skills and optimize patient outcomes.
