Advanced Board Leadership: Executive Officers

You've learned the fundamentals of board service. What happens when your board asks you to lead?

Most board members are handed a title, chair, treasurer, secretary, and left to figure out the rest. Fundamentals of Nonprofit Board Leadership gets you the vocabulary: bylaws, fiduciary duty, what a good meeting looks like. Advanced Board Leadership Training goes further, into how the officer role actually functions once you're the one accountable for it, and what happens the day you hand it to someone else.

This training is for current board chairs, treasurers, and secretaries, and for the board members being prepared to take on those roles. It builds on Fundamentals and assumes you already know your way around a board table.

Through discussion and guided practice, we'll work through three questions:

• What do chairs, treasurers, and secretaries actually owe their board, legally and practically, beyond what's written in the bylaws?
• How do the three officer roles work together in practice, and where does the handoff between them usually break down?
• What does it take to prepare someone else to do your job well?

We encourage boards to send a pair, a current officer alongside someone who may step into the role one day. The conversation between them, in the room and in the exercises, is often more valuable than anything we teach from the front.

Leave with a clearer picture of what the role actually requires, a start on your board's own succession plan, and a partner back home who was in the room with you.
