The Eighth District Court of Appeals, in partnership with the Cleveland State University College of Law, is offering an all-day CLE, featuring Eighth District Court of Appeals judges and staff attorneys, along with esteemed practitioners and legal scholars. The seminar is available both in-person and remotely via zoom and will focus on advanced topics in civil and criminal appeals.

III. Ethics and AI: What Every Lawyer Needs to Know
Info: The practice of law has seen the rapid introduction of generative AI tools in research and drafting in recent years, especially in appellate matters. A diverse panel of speakers from different segments of the legal world will offer their views on the ethical use of AI in the practice of law. The various perspectives will include a partner from a major law firm, senior counsel with the Ohio Board of Professional Conduct, and an attorney specializing in licensure and attorney discipline defense.

Info: This presentation will cover the M**der of Marlene Steele, planned and orchestrated by her husband, Judge Robert Steele, on the night of January 9, 1969. The presentation will cover events leading to the M**der, the details of the M**der, and the subsequent legal proceedings that brought Judge Steele to justice.

V. In the Trenches. The Criminal Appellate Practitioners' Perspective
Info: Eighth District Court of Appeals Judge Deena Calabrese moderates a panel discussion featuring practitioners from the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, Cuyahoga County Public Defender’s Office and the criminal defense bar. The panel will explore relevant developments in appellate criminal law including decisions from the various appellate districts in Ohio and the Ohio Supreme Court as well as nationwide trends. Topics include suppression rules under the Fourth Amendment, clarifications to the manifest weight standard, the party-presentation principle, challenges to evolving law enforcement
technology, Second Amendment challenges to Ohio gun laws, the application of Marsy’s Law, juvenile bindover decisions and appellate review of consecutive sentences.
