About this Event
Step into a warm, welcoming space where creativity meets culture and personal expression. In this workshop, we’ll explore the powerful world of Adinkra symbols — visual motifs from Ghanaian culture that carry deep meanings tied to wisdom, values, identity, and life lessons.
What are Adinkra symbols?
Originating from the Akan people of Ghana and the Ivory Coast, Adinkra symbols are more than beautiful designs — each one carries a story, a proverb, or a life philosophy. From symbols of strength and unity to ones celebrating resilience and transformation, they have been used for centuries in textiles, art, and storytelling.
During the session you will:
- Learn the stories and meanings behind a selection of traditional Adinkra symbols
- Reflect on what resonates with you personally, which ideas speak to your journey, values, or outlook
- Choose a symbol that connects with your story and use it as inspiration for your own mixed-media artwork
Whether you’re experienced with art or just curious to explore visual expression, this is a space to:
- Create something meaningful with your hands
- Engage in thoughtful conversation about symbolism, identity, and interpretation
- Connect with others in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere
All materials will be provided, just bring your openness to explore and make. No prior knowledge of Adinkra symbols or art experience necessary!
Why this workshop matters:
Adinkra symbols remind us that meaning lives in the stories we tell — about ourselves and the world around us. Together, we’ll bridge tradition and personal expression, creating pieces that are both beautiful and deeply meaningful.
