Adapting Alliances In A Changing Indo-Pacific

About this Event

Home to more than half of the world’s population, 60 percent of global GDP, and two-thirds of global economic growth, the Indo-Pacific is critical to global security and prosperity. At the same time, shifts in the regional balance of power and the increasingly interconnected nature of regional security challenges are placing greater importance on the capabilities of U.S. allies and their ability to coordinate more closely with one another. Efforts to advance a Free and Open Indo-Pacific therefore raise important questions about how longstanding bilateral alliances can adapt as allies and partners assume greater responsibility for deterrence, crisis response, and regional resilience.
Closer cooperation among the United States, South Korea, and Japan reflects this broader evolution in the regional security architecture. Through regular consultations, information sharing, trilateral exercises, and coordination on shared security challenges, the three countries illustrate how bilateral alliances can become more closely connected while retaining their existing foundations. Bringing together experts on alliance adaptation, extended deterrence, and Indo-Pacific security, this panel will examine the changing role of U.S. alliances across the region and consider how bilateral alliances, minilateral partnerships, and regional institutions can reinforce one another to strengthen deterrence, improve crisis response, and build longer-term regional resilience.
