The Beyond Barriers competition, organized by the AIA Dallas Codes & Standards Committee, focused on a barrier-free community inclusive of all disabilities and life challenges, one that allows equal access in an affordable and socially responsible manner. The competition aimed to provoke discussion that could provide innovative solutions for a real challenge within our communities, including homelessness. The unhoused community often suffers from a lack of healthcare options which can result in long-term illnesses and disabilities. This competition focused on designing a tiny house community that is code compliant, creative, and beautiful. Learn more about the competition here.

Join us for the first AD EXchange of 2023 as Ricardo Munoz, AIA presents his winning concept, Vamos, a tiny home community in which each home has its own identity through its unique orientation and roof design. In his design, the front of the homes porches are connected through a generous and playful spiral path. This spiral is meant to serve as connecting spine that leads you from the perimeter to a central community courtyard and pavilion. The name Vamos is derived from the folding planes of the roofs (similar to the folding lines of the word VAMos) as well as the active lifestyle the project promotes.

About Ricardo:

Ricardo A. Muñoz, AIA is an associate principal at Page in Dallas and an adjunct instructor at Syracuse University. Born in San Jose, Costa Rica, he came to the United States as a young child with his parents. Every year until graduate school, Ricardo visited Costa Rica and Mexico and formed experiences and values that inform his approach to design and education. He has traveled extensively and has lived in Barcelona, Paris, and Rome throughout his studies.
