About this Event
“Together we can start to change the culture that leads to violence against women and girls in Northumbria and my office is offering a range of courses to help drive this change.” – PCC Kim McGuinness”
In the UK, 71% of women have experienced sexual harassment in a public space. It doesn’t have to be this way. When we see or hear sexual harassment and do nothing, we empower the harasser. If you noticed something that wasn’t okay, would you know what to do?
Get the skills, knowledge and confidence to become an Active Bystander in your community!
HOW TO BE AN ACTIVE BYSTANDER IN TACKLING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS (VAWG)
What is it? Active Bystander Training gives you a range of tools to safely respond to potentially harmful situations such as sexual harassment in public places. By attending the training you can gain the skills, confidence, knowledge and practical tools and techniques to intervene skilfully and safely in a range of situations, whether with a stranger or with a friend.
That could be diffusing it, offering help to the victim or calling on others to help you out. It doesn’t have to be confrontational – a few calm words can make the difference. When we intervene skilfully, we encourage others to do so too, sparking positive culture change and preventing violence against women and girls, making everyone feel safer in public spaces.
This training is free of charge and funded by Kim McGuinness, the Northumbria Police & Crime Commissioner, as part of her ongoing commitment to women’s safety.
This course will take place across two half day sessions:
- Friday 7th June 2024, 9.30am - 1pm
- Friday 14th June 2024, 1.30pm - 5pm
You will be sent calendar invitations for both of the above dates to attend the course, please do ensure that you are available for both of these dates before you book your place.
Anyone can be an Active Bystander and we welcome everyone across our Northumbria region to attend - this course is for anyone aged 18 and over due to safeguarding reasons.
NOTE: Due to limited spaces funded for this training, if for any reason you can't make it to a session please do cancel your place as soon as you know so that it can be reallocated to another delegate on the waitlist.
