The Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9) will feature new member Matt DeLoughery in “Across the Lawn: A Study in Progress,” as part of the September First Friday art tour, Friday, September 4th, 6-9pm. Admission and parking are free.
“Across the Lawn: A Study in Progress” is a showcase of Matt DeLoughery’s ongoing series of prints, wearables, and installations that explore identity, performance, surveillance, and the quiet expectations we place on ourselves and one another.
“It’s about the distance between who we are and who we believe we’re expected to be, using suburban imagery as a metaphor for social performance,” DeLoughery said. “Neighborhoods often represent ideas of success, safety, perfection, and belonging; but those appearances are carefully maintained. We compare ourselves to people we barely know, filling in the blanks with assumptions. What happens when those assumptions become the standards we use to judge ourselves? How much of our identity is genuinely ours and how much is something we’ve learned to perform?”
About Matt DeLoughery
Matt DeLoughery is a contemporary mixed-media artist that blends printmaking, sculpture, installation, wearable art and emerging technologies with traditional processes like drawing, painting, and RISO printing. He grew up with interests in both art and design, and earned a degree in architecture, which taught him to think about space, systems, and the way people move through environments, which influences his approach to installations and exhibitions.
“Professionally, I’ve spent much of my career working in arts education and community engagement throughout Indiana,” DeLoughery said. “I’ve designed STEAM programs, taught students of all ages, lead public art projects and worked with nonprofits to create opportunities for creative expression.
Outside the studio, I’m deeply involved in Indianapolis’s queer community through community arts initiatives and Stonewall Sports Indianapolis. Building community has become just as important to me as creating artwork. My personal studio practice and my community work constantly inform one another. They both come from the same belief that creativity can help people understand themselves, connect with others, and shape the future.”
