Accessible Adventures: A Fun Day at Deer Island 2026
Join us on August 29, 2026 at 12:00 PM (Eastern Daylight Time) for a super fun and accessible day out at Deer Island! Whether you're coming with friends or family, there's plenty to explore and enjoy in a relaxed, welcoming vibe. Join the Winthrop Commission on Disability and the Friends of Winthrop Beach for a free, fun-filled day celebrating accessible outdoor recreation at Deer Island.
Our partners include the MWRA, Mass Advocates Standing Strong, Access 2 Community and Friendship, WINARC, and Division of Marine Fisheries.
Family-friendly, accessible, and inclusive activities include: cycling with adaptive bikes, rides on pedicabs around the island, fishing lessons (bait, rod & reel ready for your lesson!), or cruise around the island aboard the MV Massachusetts.
Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the view! Don't forget the sunscreen!
Please register so we can reserve enough bikes and rods & reels, and register especially if you are requesting an accommodation. You can register online or call (617) 240-2487. Allow at least two weeks (14 days) advance notice when requesting accommodations. Last-minute requests will be accepted, but we may be unable to fulfill the request.
RESERVATIONS FOR ALL ACTIVITIES ARE "FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED" BASIS! THEY ARE NOT GUARANTEES FOR CERTAIN TIMES! TICKETS FOR THE BOAT CRUISE WILL BE DISTRIBUTED AT THE EVENT.

Fishing Lessons at the Deer Island Pier

Rides on a Pedicab by Trike Hub
Info: A Pedicab driver will take you and a friend around the island, pointing out the beautiful sites. RIDES ARE FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED.

Cruise on the MV Massachusetts
Info: Grab a seat and take a cruise around the island. Enjoy the views and the ride, along with a narrative about interesting facts of the island and surrounding areas. Limited to the first 250 ticket holders. Tickets will be distributed at the event.

Adaptive Cycling
Info: Spaulding Rehab will be providing adaptive bikes for independent cycling experiences around the island. Staff and volunteers will help choose a good bicycle for you and let you try out their assortment of bikes. BIKE RIDES ARE FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED.
