About this Event
Drawing on scholarship and extensive classroom experience, Dr. Kinsella and co-author, Theresa Hancock, introduce research-based instructional principles and practices to prepare mixed-ability classes for the vocabulary demands of academic interaction, text analysis, and constructed response. Participants engage in hands-on lesson modeling, observe video footage, review sample lessons, and analyze CCSS competency aligned word lists to establish a school-wide academic vocabulary initiative.
Participants will learn effective ways to:
• Analyze text to establish conceptual, topical, and high-utility vocabulary priorities
• Examine competency-aligned lists with words to infuse in units of study
• Frontload central lesson concepts using a viable process and customized organizers
• Explicitly teach high-utility academic word families with a consistent interactive routine
• Integrate examples and practice using common collocations (academic word partners)
• Structure brief, constructed verbal and written responses applying new lesson terms
• Guide informed analysis of text context to ascertain new word meaning
• Set up an organized vocabulary notebook with relevant sections and note-taking guides
• Design and implement brief formative assessments to provide meaningful review
