R.J. Jenkins was in New York City 25 years ago when the planes hit the towers of the World Trade Center. Every year since, as a way to remember, he returns to W. H. Auden’s “Musée des Beaux Arts,” a poem about how even when a life - or a world - is being transformed by catastrophe, ordinary life manages somehow to continue all around it.
Please join him on the 25th anniversary of September 11 for a public lecture that will explore Auden’s extraordinary poem, the Bruegel painting that inspired it, and what both can teach us about suffering, attention, memory, and our obligations to one another. Together, we will consider what it means to remember an event that stopped the world for some, even as the world, impossibly, kept on going.
