Set in a tight-knit society that only seems to experience seasons, star director Nuri Bilge Ceylan returns with a masterful existential drama that delves into the darkest parts of the human soul.
Samet, an art teacher in his 30s, is serving his fourth year of teaching duty in a desolate countryside in Anatolia, Turkey. He is bored and tired, feels that life is drying up, and wants to return to Istanbul. However, an innocent but thoughtless flirtation with a young classmate causes problems for him at school, and Samet faces many different emotions. A new acquaintance with a teacher from another school provides the challenges he needs to confront his own thoughts and feelings.
Ceylan excels in the highest realms of conversational art, with a majestic visual style and actors who deliver at the highest level, not least Merve Dizdar, who won an award for best female lead at the Cannes Film Festival this year. This film is one of the year's highlights for all those who love the art of cinema and want to dive into its wonderful depths.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan (b. 1959) is Turkey's no. 1 contemporary filmmaker. He studied chemistry and electronics before eventually switching to film studies. Ceylan's first short film Koza (1995) was shown at the Cannes Festival, where he has become a fixture. A number of his films have previously been shown at the Film fra Sør festival, such as Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011), Winter Sleep (2014) and The Wild Pear Tree (2018).
