What are the stakes of the 2024 election on abortion rights in the US? Where will abortion show up on the ballot and what can we do to win?
About this Event

After the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, the landscape of abortion rights in the US shifted dramatically. Multiple states have moved to enshrine the right to abortion in their constitutions, while others have increased restrictions and criminilized abortion access even further. Over the past few weeks, we have seen extreme pushes to limit reproductive health access – beyond jsut abortion access – in several states.

Abortion and reproductive freedom will likely play a large role in this years election – the stakes are high at the state and federal level.

Where will abortion show up directly on the ballot and how can we support organizers? What impact will the outcome of the 2024 presidential election have on reproductive health access across the country? Where do the courts get entertwined in all of this? Joining us at Manny's to answer these questions are two phenomenal leaders in the fight to protect reproductive freedom for us all.

Jenny Lawson, Vice President of the Organizing and Electoral Campaigns Department at Planned Parenthood, has been part of the Planned Parenthood team since 2012, where she previously served as the National Campaigns Director at Parenthood Action Fund and Planned Parenthood Votes. Jenny has worked in progressive politics and community organizing since 2000 in states like Florida, Virginia, Oregon, and Washington. As part of her early grassroots organizing work, she led ballot initiative signature drives on redistricting reform in Florida, fought for minimum wage increases, and advocated for predatory lending reform. Jenny lives with her three kids and husband in Alameda, California.

Shannon Olivieri Hovis is a policy expert, political strategist, and passionate LGBTQ leader with more than 15 years of experience as a change maker in California state and local government, electoral campaigns, the classroom, and mission-driven advocacy. Under her leadership, Reproductive Freedom for All California (formerly NARAL) helped establish the CA Future of Abortion Council, championed and enacted dozens of pivotal reproductive freedom bills, and grew its statewide membership by more than 60%. Shannon previously worked in the Civil Rights section of the California Department of Justice and in the executive offices of Attorney General Kamala Harris, State Assemblymember Raul Bocanegra, and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.
