Many people are not knowledgeable or confident to offer assistance. but just like St Johns First Aid is accepted and widespread in our community, however most do not cover mental health problems.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches people how to help a person who is developing or experiencing a worsening of a mental health problem, or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional treatment is received, or the crisis resolves.
Led by a local Yamatji woman who is Mental Health First Aid Australia accredited, this course integrates an Aboriginal cultural perspective and explores Aboriginal social and emotional wellbeing, mental health problems in Indigenous communities and strategies for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
