Join SafeNest for a nonpartisan Town Hall Series featuring Nevada candidates for Governor and Attorney General. Each Town Hall will focus on domestic and sexual violence in Southern Nevada, addressing prevention, funding, offender accountability, access to services, and the policies needed to strengthen Nevada’s response.
As voters prepare for the November election, these public Town Halls will provide Southern Nevadans with an important opportunity to hear directly from the candidates about how they will prioritize these issues, protect survivors, and help build a safer Nevada.
This moderated Town Hall will focus exclusively on issues related to domestic and sexual violence; questions outside this scope will not be considered. To submit a question for consideration, please include it on this form. Attendees will also have an opportunity to submit questions at the event. Respectful audience participation is encouraged and welcomed.
About Aaron Ford:
Aaron Ford didn't just grow up hearing about struggle,he lived it. Raised in a poor, working-class family in Texas, his dad stocked shelves at a grocery store and his mom worked odd jobs to make ends meet. One of his earliest memories is his dad coming home from a long shift carrying a box of stale candy bars he'd found next to a dumpster -- too old to sell, but still food for the family. Aaron and his brother ate from that box for weeks. The SKOR bar became his favorite. To this day, he keeps one on his nightstand and at his desk -- a quiet, daily reminder of what real struggle looks like, and what he's fighting for.
Ford often says that Project Upward Bound -- a federally funded college prep program for low-income, first-generation students -- saved his life. Education became his way out, and eventually his calling. He became the first in his family to graduate college, then earned five degrees, four in education, and taught math in public schools.
But the path wasn't easy. After his junior year in college, Ford became a father, and then a single father just months later. He and his wife Berna worked a combined nine jobs outside of class to stay afloat. Medicaid kept his son healthy. Food stamps kept them fed. Public education gave him a path forward. As a kid, he didn't know the word "affordability," but he knew exactly what it meant to not have enough.
In 2012, Ford was elected to the Nevada State Senate. He rose to become Senate Majority Leader, and in 2018 made history as Nevada's first-ever Black statewide officeholder when he was elected Attorney General. When he ran for re-election in 2022, he earned more votes than any other statewide candidate on the ballot -- including Joe Lombardo, the Republican who narrowly won the governorship that same cycle by just 1.5%.
Now Ford is running to unseat Lombardo on an Affordable Nevada platform that's deeply, unmistakably personal. In a state where economic anxiety is a defining issue, where Trump's tariffs are hammering working families and Lombardo's allegiance to Washington Republicans has put 114,000 Nevadans' health coverage at risk, Ford is running exactly the kind of race Nevada needs. He's statistically tied in the polls (within a point or two of Lombardo, well within the margin of error) in what Democrats consider their single best opportunity to flip a Governor's mansion anywhere in the country.
Ford knows the American Dream isn't guaranteed; you have to fight for it. And right now, he's fighting for every Nevada family who's been told it's out of reach.
