Using humour and a satire lens, we want to explore what place white men will have in a world that needs to change for the majority
About this Event

Spit it Out strongly advocates for inclusivity and diversity within the UK creative industry. We realise, however, some of our favourite artists are white men and we didn’t want to exclude them from important conversations. Using humour and satire, we want to explore what place white men will have in a world that needs to change for the majority.

The panel, hosted by Hazel Peters, are invited to share their stories about the barriers they have faced, from working-class backgrounds to misrepresentation, and how their current success can be used to talk about taboo subjects and promote marginalised voices using different artistic formats. Join us as we gain insight into how Kevin P Gilday, Duncan Cowles and Daniel Abercrombie see a white man’s place in the fight for equal representation.

Hazel Peters

Hazel Peters (she/her) is a journalist, poet and founder of No Permission Needed, a magazine for Black and People of Colour in Scotland. Hazel’s journalism journey began in 2021, after she won Scottish BBC Young Reporter and produced a piece about the Black experience in Scottish schools. Hazel's work sits at the intersection of art, culture, race and gender and often is a reflection of the spaces she occupies as a Guyanese-Scottish young woman.

Kevin P Gilday

Kevin P. Gilday is an award-winning poet, writer and performer from Glasgow. He is the founder of poetry performance collective The Scribbler's Union and was co-founder of much loved spoken word cabaret night Sonnet Youth. He is a National Theatre of Scotland Breakthrough Writer, a BBC Writersroom Scottish Voice and one of Scotland’s most celebrated contemporary poets.

Kevin has performed all over the world, from Hollywood to East Kilbride. He has supported artists and public figures such as Akala, Saul Williams, George the Poet and Jeremy Corbyn. He has published five books of poetry, with his most recent - Anxiety Music - released by Verve Press in September of 2022 to universal acclaim. He is an experienced theatre-maker with a range of writing, directing and performing credits including Spam Valley (★★★★★ - The Wee Review), Courier Culture (★★★★★ - The Scotsman) and Suffering from Scottishness (★★★★ - The Scotsman) among others, and he has twice been shortlisted for the Scottish Short Play of the Year Award.

Duncan Cowles

Duncan Cowles is a BAFTA Scotland Award-winning documentary filmmaker whose short films are often known for their comedic, self-aware and sensitive approach with his films gaining significant online exposure. Duncan has won a selection of awards and received numerous nominations including being twice shortlisted for Best British Short Film at the London Critics Circle Awards.

In 2017 Duncan founded his own production company Relative Films Ltd to facilitate the production of his first feature documentary project SILENT MEN. The film is currently nearing the end of post-production and is due to be completed this year in 2023. In 2020 Duncan was commissioned to make x6 30-minute episodes of his own new documentary TV series ‘Scary Adult Things’ which looks at the struggles of the millennial generation for BBC Scotland and aired in March 2021. Alongside his directing work, Duncan has also hosted and facilitated a range of documentary filmmaking workshops for all ages at institutions.

Daniel Abercrombie
