The stars of the Bay Area country music scene come together to pay tribute to a country music legend, the Coal Miner's Daughter herself, Loretta Lynn! This show will feature the Loretta hits you love, along with some deep album cuts, all expertly played by backing band Crying Time. The audience will get to hear rare duets, collaborations and song interpretations by some of the Bay Area's favorite country artists.
Starring:
Maurice Tani - Maurice Tani is a veteran singer-songwriter and band leader of the Alt-Country - Americana scene. He has released six critically-acclaimed albums of original material over the past dozen years. His two latest, released simultaneously in late 2013 are a new studio album, “Blue Line”, and “Two Stroke”, an album of acoustic duos and trios with bassist Mike Anderson and a variety of others. “I was actually blown away. Maurice Tani writes songs that sound at once familiar, ethereal and beautiful.” -Robert Sproul, No Depression Magazine
Cindy Emch - As the First Lady of Queer Country, Cindy Emch is known for her distinct voice and ability to blend Americana, California Country, Hellbilly, Goth, and Honky Tonk, spinning radically distinctive tales from her singular perspective. NoDepression says "One could describe Emch as if Nick Cave had grown up in Bakersfield with a dynamic swagger that could part the Red Sea."
Laura Benitez - Laura Benitez is a singer-songwriter and founder of the band Laura Benitez and the Heartache. Her music uses the three chord tools of country music to tell the simple, unvarnished truth about love, too much whiskey, and the call of the road. "Ranging from the joyous to the somber, Benitez is always completely frank." -- Lyndon Bolton, No Depression Magazine
Margaret Belton - Margaret Belton is that rare artist who fuses her exceptional talent with a genuine warmth that makes audiences feel they’re part of the family. A true renaissance woman, she is a songstress, theater and film actor and a visual artist. She has starred in many independent films, theater productions and crooned various stages around The Bay Area and beyond with her Patsy tributes, collaborations with other artists and with her cabaret show 'Lady Margaret & The Countrypolitans'. Margaret founded her Patsy Cline Tribute band called ‘The Patsychords’ in 2010, has accomplished five rounds of her critically acclaimed portrayal of Patsy Cline in ‘Always… Patsy Cline’ and 8 rounds of her Patsy tribute show here at the beloved Freight!
Hank Maninger and Lynne Maes - Led by songwriting duo Hank Maninger and Lynne Maes, whose shared love of country music led to a creative partnership onstage and off, Nashville Honeymoon plays original tunes built on country, rockabilly, and honkytonk traditions. Lynne and Hank, along with bandmates Tim Wagar and Leor Beary, write songs that honor traditional country music while deliberately pushing its boundaries. Hank’s driving lead guitar, perfectly balanced by Lynne’s true-blue vocals, are - as the old song goes - the right combination. Add tight vocal harmonies, a rhythm section that can play a country shuffle every bit as well as a country rock anthem, and you’ve got a dynamic and heartfelt show every time they hit the stage.
Beckylin - Beckylin is the Glittering Queen of the Honky Tonk Scene. She is also known as Rebecca Lin Coseboom. "Rebecca Coseboom – a female front woman with an incredible voice – proves she has enough swagger and sway to keep things interesting without ever being overstated”– CMJ
Clean Heat - Clean Heat is the Duo of Evie Ladin and Lila Goehring, deep denizens of a far-reaching old time country community of late night jams, might as well be sisters-harmonies, and sad, old songs. Evie is a seasoned professional touring musician, dancer and community organizer, Lila a recent college graduate and writer. Both grew up surrounded by luminaries in traditional music, and carry that into the hearts of audiences.
Crying Time plays California honky-tonk – music that’s true to the roots of country, with a dash of the Golden State. Singer Jill Rogers’s songs illuminate love on the verge of dissolution or look back with regret at something that might have been. The band features guitarist Myles Boisen (Tom Waits, Club Foot Orchestra) and Bay Area music scene veteran Tony Marcus on fiddle, while Tim Rowe on drums and Russell Kiel on bass hold down the rhythm with grace, style, and swing. “Country singing from Oakland standouts. Real musicians, not just stompers. Jill Rogers is an amazing singer. Just plain beautiful.” – KALX Radio
Aireene Espiritu - Aireene Espiritu plays a mix of stompin', swayin' and timeless Americana reminiscent of front porch storytelling, of ghosts and the living, times of laughter and tears. “A rare breed of artist, a soul singer, a folk troubadour, a blues artist, a busk show princess, a skiffle tear-stained street singer with a heart as big as the history of the music that drives her...she is a storyteller without borders or cultural limitations.” - No Depression, Terry Roland
Lisa Marie Johnston - Lisa Marie Johnston, affectionately referred to as "LMJ," is a singer/songwriter from Oakland, Ca. She blends country, americana, and blues into a unique style she calls "Stomp and Groove."
Leigh Crow and Ruby Vixenn - Fronted by a couple of well-dressed crooners and backed by a 4 piece band of well-worn players, Velvetta is a bonafide country outfit. Less like a bar band and more like honky tonk dinner theater, Velvetta stirs a motley stew of country covers and originals spanning every country sub-genre.
