In the late 60’s our Lake Michigan beaches were carpeted with dead stinking fish, rotting in the sun all along the southern end of the lake. Native to the saltwater of the Atlantic, alewives are herrings that mysteriously populated Lake Ontario, and then Lake Erie by the 40’s. They bred furiously in Lake Michigan, eating the food our lake trout and whitefish needed, nearly eliminating the native fish.John Hinde will share the story of Salmon Unlimited, and his father Nelson Hinde, as they raised salmon “fry” big enough to compete with the alewives. John is owner of Air Diffusion Systems: https://airdiffusion.com/, a company that places aeration systems in waters worldwide. Waste water lagoon treatment is a specialty, as is aquaculture. In larger natural bodies aeration can also minimize harmful algae blooms.
