Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy: The Forgotten Suffragist
Join Susan Munro for an engaging and inspiring talk about the life and times of Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy, one of Britain's most influential yet least recognised campaigners for women's rights.
A radical reformer and human rights activist, Elizabeth spent more than 50 years fighting for women to gain the right to vote, own property, access education, and have autonomy over their own bodies. Her tireless campaigning helped shape the women's rights movement, yet her contribution has largely been written out of history.
In this fascinating presentation, Susan Munro will bring Elizabeth's story to life, exploring her achievements, challenges, and enduring legacy. Adding to the experience, Susan will deliver the talk dressed as a suffragette, helping audiences step back into the world of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The talk will also tell the story of Elizabeth's Group, whose members worked to restore Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy to public memory and successfully raised funds to commission her statue, unveiled in Congleton on International Women's Day 2022.
