Mallory Chipman
Fresh off the heels of her fifth studio album release, Mallory Chipman’s signature brand of cinematic folk-rock is making waves in the Canadian roots scene. Her latest record, Songs to a Wild God, hit #1 on CKUA upon its release and was one of the only indie albums to debut in the National Radio Top 50. Songs to a Wild God displays Mallory’s vivid lyricism and acrobatic vocals atop a deft and dynamic rhythm section, and “places her amidst the longer tradition of the great singer-songwriters” (Americana UK). In the past year alone, Chipman has toured across Canada, Europe, Korea, and Japan, turning heads at major showcases including Folk Alliance International, North by Northeast, Alberta Showcase, and BreakOut West; and drawing comparison to Kate Bush, Melissa Ethridge, and Joni Mitchell. With her skillful balance of grit and grace, Mallory Chipman powerfully embodies a rare and striking duality that leaves audiences wordless in wonderment.
John Wort Hannam
John Wort Hannam has been on his folk and roots-fueled troubadour journey for two decades, spinning song writing gold from the chaff of the lives he has encountered and those within his fertile imagination. Twenty-two years in, he shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, he’s gaining both momentum and a wider audience, winning two 2023 Canadian Folk Music Awards for Solo Artist of the Year and Contemporary Album of the Year. Add to this a Juno Award nomination, a Kerrville New Folk Win, a previous Canadian Folk Music Award, and it’s easy to see why audiences and critics alike hear something special in his narrative and lyrically driven songs. Effortlessly mixing rich and clear timbered vocals with lyrics that tug at the heart, his sound is both unique and familiar. Born on the island of Jersey in the UK, he immigrated to Canada at the age of nine. He discovered the guitar and his knack for writing songs in his early thirties while working as a teacher on the Kainai Nation in Blackfoot country. In 2001, John quit his teaching job and made himself a promise - he would try his hand at writing songs for 10 months or until his employment insurance ran out. When time was up, he had a handful of songs. They became his first recording, released in 2002. Twenty-two years later, John is recognized as one of the best folk roots songwriters in Alberta and has released 8 full length recordings.
Riwo Egor
Riwo Theo Egor is a Nigerian born singer and songwriter. She is the lead vocalist of the band Melafrique. She has been performing in Edmonton since she moved here in 2015, and has done so alongside various artists, both local and international. Riwo has performed at many major venues in Edmonton and beyond, with her band Melafrique, and as a solo artist. She is very passionate about sharing messages and personal stories through music, and enjoys doing so through the Neo-soul, R&B and Afro-Jazz styles of music. She believes in the power of music to heal wounds, and cause people to connect with each other on so many levels. One of her biggest goals in life is for her music to bring unity in the diversity of our crazy world. Riwo’s sound goes beyond the boundaries of one specific genre, so the way to best describe her music would be: a fusion of genres. However, also alternative/indie comes close in describing Riwo’s style of music.
