About Deepa Rajagoplan: Deepa Rajagopalan is the author of the short story collection, PEACOCKS OF INSTAGRAM, forthcoming with House of Anansi Press in May 2024. She won the 2021 PEN Canada New Voices Award for the title story of the collection. Her writing has appeared in literary magazines such as The New Quarterly, Room Magazine, The Malahat Review, and the anthologies like the Bristol Short Story Prize 2023. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph, and a certificate in Creative Writing from the University of Toronto's SCS.
Born in Saudi Arabia to Indian parents, she moved to India as an adolescent, and later to the United States and Canada in her twenties. She works in the tech industry in Toronto. She is now working on her first novel about a disparate group of Indian workers in Saudi Arabia, whose lives become entangled, caught in the exigencies of war, deception, and intolerance.
About the Book: Peacocks of Instagram- An under appreciated coffee shop server haunted by her past attracts thousands of followers on social media with her peacock jewellery. A hotel housekeeper up against a world of gender and class inequity quietly gets revenge on her chauvinist boss. And a foster child, orphaned in an accident directly attributable to climate change, brings down her foster father, an oil lobbyist, in spectacular fashion.
With an intense awareness of privilege and the lack of it, the fourteen stunning stories in Peacocks of Instagram explore what it means to be safe, to survive and to call a place home.
About Shashi Bhat: Shashi Bhat is the author of the story collection Death by a Thousand Cuts, and the novels The Most Precious Substance on Earth, a shortlisted finalist for the Governor General's Award for fiction, and The Family Took Shape, a finalist for the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award. Her fiction has won the Writers’ Trust/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize and been shortlisted for a National Magazine Award and the RBC Bronwen Wallace Award, and has appeared in publications across North America. Shashi is the editor of EVENT and teaches creative writing at Douglas College.
About the Book: Death By A Thousand Cuts:-A writer discovers that her ex has published a novel about their breakup. An immunocompromised woman falls in love. A Reddit post about a man’s habit of grabbing his girlfriend’s breasts prompts a shocking confession. And when a woman begins to lose her hair, she embarks on a nightmarish search for answers.
Death By a Thousand Cuts is a breathtaking and sharply funny collection about the everyday trials and impossible expectations that come with being a woman. With honesty, tenderness, and a skewering wit, these stories wrestle with rage, longing, illness, and bodily autonomy, and their inescapable impacts on a woman’s relationships with others and with herself.
About the Host: Shirarose Wilensky is an editor at House of Anansi Press, where she specializes in literary upmarket fiction and narrative non-fiction by BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, and emerging writers. A winner of the Editors Canada Tom Fairley Award, she has worked for Arsenal Pulp Press, Greystone Books, Douglas & McIntyre, and Harbour Publishing
