About this Event

Atish Mukhopadhyay is a Toronto-based sarode artist, performer, and educator, and a direct torchbearer of the Maihar Seniya Gharana of North Indian Classical Music. Trained for more than four decades in the Guru-Shishya Parampara, he was most deeply shaped by Ustad Aashish Khan, with further guidance from Professor Dhyanesh Khan, Vidushee Ameena Perera, and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Over more than twenty years as a professional musician, he has performed hundreds of concerts across India, Canada, the United States, Russia, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, and beyond. He has collaborated with artists from North Indian Classical, Western classical, West African, Chinese, Métis, and electronic traditions. From 2012 to 2023 he taught North Indian Classical Music at the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory, and from 2020 to 2021 he led the music component of Children of War: Invisible Wounds, an EU-supported initiative in Ukraine. An empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations since 2010, he has received the Nikolai Rubinstein Medal, the Surmani title, and the Sangeet Sadhak Samman. In 2025 his music became part of the permanent Art of Asia exhibition at the National Gallery Prague.

Ravi Naimpally began studying tabla under his uncle, Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, in Mumbai, became an exponent of the Farrukhabad gharana in 1990, and continued his training with Pandit Anindo Chatterjee in Kolkata. Based in Toronto, he has performed in India, Europe, and North America with artists including Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta and Pandit G.S. Sachdev, and his work across world music traditions includes performing and recording with Loreena McKennitt and the Juno-nominated Thomas Handy Trio.
