Throughout City of Fremantle’s 10 Nights in Port Festival, Old Customs House will be taken over by a cast of performers moving through landscapes of recyclable waste. They dance with patterns of exhaustion, elation and grief - slipping and slide over mountains of mess. There's the literal mess (that is, stuff everywhere!) but also the mess our world is in. They're busy, and they're ready to clean up. If someone trips and falls into a beanbag, maybe they'll stay there a while. Fixing the world is hard work – isn’t there time for a nap?
IN THE EVENINGS: A Resting Mess is a joyous, chaotic and tender 75 minute performance devised over 8 years by lead artist Daisy Sanders. The work originates from Daisy's lived experience of chronic fatigue, reflecting her thoughtful and enduring exploration of sustainability in bodies, communities and environments.
Dance and theatre moments flow between softness and serenity, focussed improvisation and riotous participatory scenes. The spell of A Resting Mess is also cast by live music played by Josten Myburgh and Pavan Hari. Whisper-quiet soundscapes, ethereal saxophone chants and moments of wild percussion mix with original songs by Felicity Groom. Her melodies infuse the work with humour and nostalgia, at times providing moments of stunning choral singing by the whole cast.
IN THE AFTERNOONS: A Resting Mess exists as an interactive installation. Audiences can join the dancers and musicians for sessions of deep and genuine rest: the generous heart of the show. Come along and nest into a magical collective space that aims to cultivate deep sensitivity, listening and care through intentional rest and nurturing community bonds.
