A Racetrack Resort or a Prairie River Valley: AWA’s 2026 Annual Lecture & Awards

This November, we welcome you to an evening of celebration and learning for the annual Martha Kostuch Wilderness and Wildlife Lecture and Awards Evening.
We are pleased to announce our guest lecture will be presented by Save the Rosebud, our 2026 Wilderness Defenders award winners. Join us for an illustrated conversation with Save the Rosebud’s Clark and Skibsted families, moderated by AWA’s Cliff Wallis.
AWA Wilderness Defenders Awards are dedicated to individuals or groups who have inspired us with their love of Alberta’s wild lands, wild rivers, and wildlife, and with their efforts and achievements for conservation.
About the Presentation:
The Rosebud River Valley is a beautiful and environmentally significant waterway with its diversity of wetlands, native grasslands, and wooded coulees. It offers sanctuary for a host of wild species, from endangered bats, threatened bank swallows and numerous other songbirds to prairie falcons and golden eagles.
This ecological treasure, just east of the hamlet of Rosebud, continues to be threatened by a large racetrack and resort development that could bring hordes of people with their loud high-powered cars and motorcycles into the valley.
Join us Nov. 13 for a conversation about the importance of this place to people and nature as well as the struggle that has wound its way through Kneehill County and Alberta government processes approving the development; provincial and federal court victories halting the project; and the successful assembly of a large conservation easement portfolio. The fight is not over but there is hope for lasting protection for this prairie jewel.
