A Quantum Dream is thrilled to announce the Missoula premiere of Galatea, an award-winning play by David Templeton, running at the Zootown Arts Community Center (ZACC) from Thursday, November 7th to Sunday, November 10th. Directed by Reggie Herbert, Galatea is a thought-provoking exploration of artificial intelligence, humanity, and the delicate hope for Earth’s future that emerges as the two become increasingly intertwined.
Galatea tells the story of Seventy-One (Jasmine Sherman), a synthetic human who, after being discovered as the lone surviving member of a lost space transport ship, undergoes therapy with Dr. Margaret Mailer (Ann Peacock). As Dr. Mailer works to uncover Seventy-One’s past, she finds herself facing unsettling truths that could alter the future of humankind. Also featuring Michael Crowley as Dr. Hughes and Stephen Blotzke as Castaway, this four-actor play is a gripping mystery set against the backdrop of a distant future.
Galatea invites audiences to explore the boundaries between technology and humanity through a narrative that can be just as touching as it is disturbing. It intertwines philosophical questions into an intimate, character-focus story, creating an experience that resonated deeply with audiences when it premiered in 2022. Director Reggie Herbert aims for Galatea to inspire thought, curiosity, and dialogue about how our perceived human flaws may contribute to a better world.
Inspired by the classic Pygmalion myth, Galatea has garnered numerous accolades, including an Honorable Mention for the Glickman Award, and was a finalist for the 2021 Harold and Mimi Steinberg American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award. The play is celebrated for its innovative take on humanity’s relationship with technology and its exploration of identity and resilience.
