Manipuri - Lecture-Demonstration by Purbita Mukherjee ‘A Perspective – Drishtikon’ is a series of lecture-demonstrations to promote the classical dance of India. This month, it is being held by the Museum Society of Mumbai with generous support from the NCPA and K.V. Mariwala Philanthropy Initiative on the 60th anniversary of the society. Manipuri exponent Purbita Mukherjee will give an insightful lecture-demonstration on the occasion. Purbita Mukherjee hails from a family with a rich background in music. Daughter of famous Rabindra Sangeet exponent Pramita Mallick, she has trained at Manipuri Nartanalaya under the able guidance of gurus Bipin Singh and Kalavati Devi. Currently, she is under the guidance of Darshana Jhaveri and Latasana Devi. Being a graded artiste of Doordarshan Kendra, Mukherjee has been awarded the title of Nartan Visharad along with Nartan Alankar from her institution Manipuri Nartanalaya, supported by the Indian Ministry of Culture. She has performed across India at various prestigious festivals as well as for ICCR-sponsored shows. She runs the Baikali Association in Kolkata for the last 11 years and is also a dance teacher with Shahana, a 40-year-old institution in Mumbai dedicated to vocal and dance training. Having many productions and works to her credit, Mukherjee is committed to teaching Manipuri dance and culture far and wide. She works extensively with the NCPA, as a Principal Guru under Nrityaparichay, a dance diploma programme for children of aided and municipal schools as well as conducting workshops and lecture-demonstrations at various schools across Mumbai. The Museum Society of Mumbai was founded in 1963 with the aim of promoting public interest in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and cultivating in the people of Mumbai an appreciation for art and culture. Through the years, the society, which has a dedicated group of volunteers, has become a highly respected and dynamic organisation. Its activities include lectures by renowned national and international scholars, guided visits to significant historical and cultural sites and seminars and workshops on topics related to culture and history. The society’s aim is to inculcate a sense of history and culture in young people, offering specially tailored programmes for school and college students, as well as for people with disabilities orfrom underprivileged backgrounds, children with cancer and senior citizens. An NCPA Presentation in collaboration with the Museum Society of Mumbai and supported by K.V. Mariwala Philanthropy Initiative. Entry free and on a first-come-first-served basis.
