Second Act: New Work by Andy Newman
A One-Day Pop-Up Exhibition — November 13
For over fifteen years, Andy Newman built a career as a Washington, D.C. attorney. Then a friend gave him a set of paints, and everything changed. At 36, Newman traded the courtroom for the studio, guided by a conviction he still holds: he'd rather paint than "troop to the office every day." That decision has shaped a body of work defined by range and confidence. Newman moves fluidly between oil, pastel, acrylic, and colored pencil, and across subject matter — landscape, abstraction, and the figure — often folding them into a single canvas in unexpected combinations. His influences read like a survey of modern painting's quieter geniuses: the hushed stillness of Giorgio Morandi, the isolation of Edward Hopper, the raw color of Maurice de Vlaminck. Further back, he finds kinship with the Baroque masters of light and shadow, Georges de La Tour and Caravaggio — a lineage visible in the way Newman's own paintings hold contrast, mood, and quiet drama in balance. Today, Newman's work hangs in more than ten galleries across Europe and North America, and he maintains his studio at the Umbrella Arts Center in Concord, Massachusetts. Newman is a longtime favorite among our collectors, and we look forward to his visit every year. This pop-up marks his annual return to JK Art House — and kicks off our Small Treasures show. Join us November 12th for a special pop-up presentation of his newest paintings.
