Get ready for the most original gig of the festive season! We are thrilled to announce an exciting new collaboration between two of York's long-standing community bands, York RI Golden Rail Band and Bargestra.
This is more than just a concert - it’s a party celebrating a dynamic clash of styles, united by a shared passion for fun, accessible music-making in the heart of York.
Meet the Bands
York RI Golden Rail Band
The York RI Golden Rail Band, with a heritage stretching back over 40 years, is a cornerstone of York’s thriving brass band scene. They perform traditional and contemporary music from Christmas carols, marches and overtures to movie classics, pop and occasionally even rock! While their playing is rooted in brass band tradition, conductor Nick Eastwood is not afraid to push the boundaries, offering a striking and thrilling contrast to Bargestra’s looser, groove-based style.
Bargestra
Since 2011, Bargestra have grown and evolved into an enthusiastic 22-player line-up. Their ethos is built around an informal, all-abilities approach to music making. They specialise in fun, feel-good music, covering everything from upbeat pop and disco to infectious funk and jazz. Expect high-energy grooves and plenty of festive spirit!
The Unexpected Collaboration
This is a brand new pairing, and the night will feature both bands performing their best material. Will they collaborate on a surprising Christmas carol mash-up? Can brass bands swing? Will the formality of brass banding match the fun and funk of Bargestra? You’ll have to be there to find out!
