What is St Lucia's Day and how did it come about?
St Lucia's Day (or Sankta Lucia) commemorates St Lucia, a young Christian martyr who died for her faith. According to the legends, St Lucia would secretly bring food to the Christians hiding in Roman catacombs under the city. She would light her way with candles held in a wreath on her head so she could have both hands free to carry things, while singing so they could regognize her as a friend.
How is St Lucia's Day celebrated?
The day is celebrated with a childrens choir singing carols to candlelight, and washed down with glögg/gløgg ( hot mulled wine)
The celebration day is actually December 13th and coincides with the Winter Solstice of the old "Julian" pagan calendar. The Winter Solstice gives breath to the thoughts of longer days ahead with the return of light and new life in winter.
