Ring in the New Year with a tribute to La Jolla's miniature opera tradition
About this Event

In 1923, traveling impresario Edward Ewald debuted his miniature opera in La Jolla, with a pint-sized production of La Boheme. One hundred years later, as the bells start to ring on New Year’s Eve, the La Jolla Historical Society will pay tribute to these miniature opera programs with a presentation of opera scenes both live and recorded from from classics such as “The Marriage of Figaro,” “La Boheme,” “Aida” and “Der Rosenkavalier” – all repertoire Ewald once featured to entertain audiences on his small version of New York’s Metropolitan Opera house in the 1920s.

Guests will enjoy performances by Soprano Martha Jean Weaver and Latinx artist/writer Dianna Elizardo, as well as historic recordings of arias by legendary tenors such as Enrico Caruso.

Guests are encouraged to arrive in their opera night attire, and will receive festive masks and champagne with ticket purchase.

Tickets are $25 for non-members; $15 for members. Capacity is limited for this intimate performance.
