Artist Statement

The intersection of memory and identity is what drives my current practice. Objects can store feelings and memory in a way that feels layered, accessible through empathizing with past versions of myself. Who I am today feels very different than who I was yesterday, but painting old objects makes it feel easier to communicate with the past. The histories embedded into these subjects have a permanent quality. In using the still life as a vehicle, I combine different objects from different eras and contexts to exchange stories. The narratives sampled from these objects range from familial grief, to the everyday domestic, to the complex feelings of growing up in the deep south. As a lifelong painter, I feel that working within the medium allows me to document stories through visuals that fit within my own mental framework. In overlapping, warping, and stretching objects, I play with hierarchy of information, building new pathways and narratives with familiar nodes.

About the Artist

Alex Bow is a multidisciplinary artist working out of San Antonio, Texas. Originally from Woodworth, Louisiana, she plays with imagery that references her childhood compared to her present life. She uses catfish, fried food, domesticity, and intimacy to create a dialogue between the deep south and personal identity. After earning her BA in 2018, she worked as a high school art teacher for two years in Louisiana. In 2021, she moved to San Antonio to pursue her Master’s of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), completing it in 2024. While in graduate school, she focused on painting, large scale papier mache installation, animation, and ceramics. She currently instructs studio art courses at UTSA, digital courses with Northwest Vista College (NVC), and works with high school artists through UTSA’s Teen Studio Intensive.
