About this Event
A MOTHER APART is a new documentary by filmmaker Laurie Townshend. It is a radical re-imagining of family and motherhood, chronicling the international quest of award-winning Jamaican poet, author, and performance artist Staceyann Chin to find and forge a healing relationship with the mother who abandoned her in her youth.
Carnegie Museum of Art will host a screening of the film in partnership with Black Unicorn Library and Archive, Sibyls Shrine, Dreams of Hope: Queer Youth Arts, Doc Salon, and Pittsburgh Sound + Image.
An unflinching travelog exploring a creative life and bittersweet memories, the film follows Staceyann’s decades-long odyssey from Brooklyn to Jamaica, Canada, and Europe. Her search is for reconciliation with a distant mother while raising her own young daughter with love, respect, and wisdom. It is a gripping story of a brave journey leading Staceyann to a new definition of home.
The event is presented with a follow-up discussion and refreshments.
