A Memory Palace of Migration - the Installation

“A Memory Palace of Migration” is a standalone exhibition focusing on nine themes drawn from Edith Reisner Newton’s play, which link Hedwig Müller’s migration story to the migration stories carried by all of us.
The Nine Themes:
1. Departure | Entry
2. Journey | Transportation
3. Waiting
4. Friends | Allies
5. Luggage | Baggage
6. Fabric | Clothes | Fashion
7. Food | Hunger
8. Voices | Language | Songs | Sounds
9. Familiar | Unfamiliar
In a Memory Palace (the play) is a profound meditation on displacement: both the physical displacement of refugees, immigrants, and others who make new lives far from their original homes, and the temporal displacement of fragmented memories. In the shifting rooms of the Memory Palace, love and regret, fear and hope emerge and recede, driven by a single deep desire: to have one’s story heard.
Along with the performance, the installation focuses on the healing, stabilizing, uplifting, and transformative power of personal stories of human migration. By sharing our stories, we discover our interrelatedness while reaffirming the communities to which we belong.
Help us build our San Francisco Memory Palace by sharing your story. If you’ve ever moved, or you have a family story of migration, please contribute the true story to the “A Memory Palace of Migration” through our dedicated app on your Apple or Android device. Thank you for your contribution!
