Join us for Dr. Robert Curry's lecture “Long-term Investigation of Templin Woods Chickadees: Stand-Alone Studies and Components of Hybridization Research”!
Members of the Curry Lab at Villanova University have studied chickadee ecology and behavior for just over a quarter century, beginning in 1997. A central focus of their work concerns hybridization between Carolina and black-capped chickadees. For this, data from Templin Woods (located within French & Pickering's Templin Woods Preserve) provides essential comparative foundation using the Wood's year-round resident Carolina chickadees. Additional study components focused on behavior of “irruption” black-capped chickadees that visit in some winters, and on various aspects of Carolina chickadee biology for its own sake. This talk will present an overview of the Curry Lab's work on chickadees in the Templin Woods and its relevance for understanding hybridization, extreme weather, and other aspects of songbird biology.
Dr. Robert Curry began studying birds during high school in his native Massachusetts before continuing in ornithology as a college student in New Hampshire and Nova Scotia, where he has family roots. He completed doctoral research at the University of Michigan, investigating social ecology and conservation biology of Darwin’s mockingbirds in Galápagos, before carrying out field studies of Florida scrub-jays as a postdoctoral fellow and then as a Villanova faculty member beginning in 1991. In the late 1990s, Bob and many of his undergraduate and Masters students began studying Pennsylvania chickadees, aiming especially to increase understanding about the causes and consequences of hybridization in this locally abundant and easily studied group of birds.
