Join us as we celebrate the life and work of Scottish biologist Iain Douglas-Hamilton with a special screening of A Life Among Elephants at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, founder & president of Save the Elephants - passed away on December 8th, 2025, in Nairobi at age 83. We are honored to share this film as a tribute to his tireless work with these amazing animals.
Iain’s extraordinary life and relentless fight for elephants takes center stage in this emotional and inspiring documentary featuring unprecedented access, newly unearthed archival footage, and powerful interviews — including contributions from Jane Goodall and Iain’s daughters, Saba and Dudu Douglas-Hamilton. His legacy lives on through Save the Elephants, the nongovernmental organization he founded in 1993, dedicated to securing a future for elephants and fostering coexistence between humans and wildlife.
We will be joined by Dr. George Wittemyer, chief scientist of Save the Elephants who worked with Iain for the past two decades, to dive deeper into the world of elephants. Dr. Wittemyer is also a professor of fish, wildlife and conservation biology at Colorado State University. After the film, he will join Dr. Holly Lutz, associate curator of mammals at the Museum, for a short panel discussion on the ongoing work to preserve and protect these animals and their habitats.
As we bid farewell to our temporary exhibit, The Secret World of Elephants — on display through Jan. 25, 2026 — we hope you will join us for this program and learn how we can connect to the important work being done across the world, starting right here in Colorado
