A Life-Affirming Evening of Russian Poetry in Exile

Poetry has always been one of the most enduring forms of resistance—a way to preserve memory, integrity, and freedom of expression when other voices are forced into silence.

Exile can mean different things. For some, it is the physical separation from a country once called home. For others, it is an inner withdrawal—a moral act of self-preservation necessary to protect one's humanity and dignity.

Join us for an evening of contemporary Russian poetry featuring designer, artist, and reader Vladimir Korolkov, who will present works by Vadim Zhuk, Yulia Pikalova, and Leonid Salmin. Their poetry reflects on love and life, conscience and loss, exile and resilience, and the challenge of remaining true to oneself amid war, censorship, and political upheaval.

More than a literary reading, this evening is an invitation to reflect on poetry's role in preserving memory and human dignity, while giving voice to those struggling to breathe under authoritarian and militarized rule. Whether you are already familiar with contemporary Russian poetry or discovering it for the first time, this intimate gathering offers an opportunity to engage with the moral and human questions that define our time.

Изгнание в одном случае означает физический отказ от страны, бывшей родиной, в другом — внутреннюю самоизоляцию как форму нравственной гигиены, необходимую для сохранения человеческого достоинства.

Приглашаем вас на вечер современной русской поэзии с участием дизайнера, художника и чтеца Владимира Королькова, который представит произведения Вадима Жука, Юлии Пикаловой и Леонида Салмина. Их стихи говорят о любви и жизни, совести и утрате, изгнании и стойкости, о верности себе в эпоху войны, цензуры и политических потрясений.

Это не просто литературное чтение, а возможность задуматься о роли поэзии в сохранении человеческого достоинства и памяти, услышать голоса, которым в авторитарном и милитаристском пространстве всё труднее дышать. Независимо от того, хорошо ли вы знакомы с современной русской поэзией или открываете её для себя впервые, этот камерный вечер приглашает к размышлению о нравственных и человеческих вопросах, определяющих наше время.

Vladimir Korolkov was born in 1961 in Kamianets-Podilskyi and grew up between Ukraine and Leningrad, where he attended an art school and later graduated from the Academy of Arts. Although initially drawn to architecture, he chose a career in graphic design, working across a wide range of visual disciplines, including branding, industrial design, exhibition design, photography, illustration, and storyboarding for advertising and film.

Following Russia's annexation of Crimea and increasing persecution over his anti-war stance, Korolkov was forced to leave Russia. Now based in the United States, he continues to speak publicly about Russia's war against Ukraine. His sculpture Marge criticizes the reluctance of the United States to provide stronger support for Ukraine, using blue-and-yellow symbolism and the concept of "profit" to illustrate how self-interest can obscure the real threat to freedom and the international order.

Владимир Корольков родился в 1961 году в Каменце-Подольском, вырос между Украиной и Ленинградом, где окончил художественную школу и позже Академию художеств. Вместо архитектуры выбрал графический дизайн, работая в широком спектре визуальных дисциплин: от фирменного стиля и предметного дизайна до выставок, фотосъёмки, иллюстрации и сторибордов для рекламы и кино.

После аннексии Крыма и начала преследований за антивоенную позицию он был вынужден покинуть Россию. В США Владимир продолжает публично говорить о войне России против Украины. Его скульптура Marge критикует нежелание США активно поддерживать Украину, используя сине-жёлтую символику и образ «выгоды», которая заслоняет реальную угрозу свободе и мировому порядку.
