About this Event
Join us for an exclusive screening of the film A Letter to the West Side, a touching documentary that explores the rich history, challenges, and resilience of Ann Arbor’s historic Black community, the West Side.
Through personal stories and historical accounts, this film examines the Great Migration to Ann Arbor, the vibrant social atmosphere of the West Side, thriving Black local businesses and schools, and the systemic challenges that shaped the community and eventually led to its loss. It also explores the transformation of the area, culminating in the development of new affordable housing like the Dunbar Tower. A Letter to the West Side pays tribute to the trailblazers who laid the foundation for progress, celebrates the community’s remarkable achievements, and sheds light to the injustices once faced.
This documentary aims to illuminate this overlooked community, giving a voice to those whose stories have been silenced and forgotten.
A Letter to the West Side is a heartfelt letter to the past, present and future of the Historic West Side community. Whether you’re a lifelong resident, a newcomer, or simply someone who cares about preserving Black history, this screening is an opportunity to connect, reflect, and inspire action.
