Join us for A is for Afrofuturism Family Storytime at West Oakland Public Library with and .
This special family storytime celebrates Afrofuturism, imagination, and the power of stories for young readers and their families. Together, we’ll share joyful, inspiring books and create space for community, curiosity, and connection.
This event is made possible through a microgrant from the .
Pay-what-you-can tickets will help support the event by funding snacks and copies of , , and for children attending the storytime.

About Isis Asare
founded Sistah Scifi in 2019, the first Black-owned bookstore focused on science fiction and fantasy in the United States, as recognized by the American Booksellers Association. In 2023, Sistah Scifi launched three book vending machines located in Seattle and Oakland, CA.
In addition to serving as the CEO of Sistah Scifi, Isis is the Executive Director of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA). She is the former Executive Director of Aunt Lute Books and is also the contributing editor of Afrofuturism: Short Stories, from Flame Tree Press. Read more here.
About Angela Dalton
Angela Dalton is a children’s book author based in Oakland, California, and has a background in producing online kids’ games. She began writing at a young age and saw it as a way to create her own world. Her self-published picture book, , was inspired by her grandmother and an early fascination with outer space and astronomy. Both traditionally and independently published, her work centers black children as main characters in spaces and represented them in ways she wishes she had seen growing up. Read more here.
About West Oakland Library
The West Oakland Branch of the Oakland Public Library, established in 1977, serves as a vital resource and gathering place for the West Oakland community. Situated at 1801 Adeline Street, the branch offers a diverse collection of materials, including books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, and newspapers for patrons of all ages. Notably, it houses a dedicated African American collection, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the neighborhood, as well as smaller collections in Arabic and Spanish, catering to the area's linguistic diversity. The library also features graphic novel collections suitable for all age groups, supporting a wide range of reading interests.
Beyond its collections, the West Oakland Branch provides various amenities to support community engagement and learning. Facilities include accessible bathrooms, computers, copiers, fax machines, meeting rooms, parking, printing services, scanners, and study rooms. The branch hosts a variety of events and programs, such as family storytimes and tenants' rights clinics, fostering a sense of community and providing valuable resources to residents. As part of the Oakland Public Library system, the West Oakland Branch exemplifies a commitment to serving the educational and cultural needs of its patrons.
About Oakland Public Library
The Oakland Public Library is a part of the City of Oakland in California and has been in existence since 1878. They have:

- The African-American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO).
