Tijs Donkers / Albert Rijkens / Oliv Oliv >A GREENER FUTURE FOR CARGO TRANSPORT
Every product you use has taken a journey, leaving a hidden trail of emissions. Ships and trucks, responsible for the largest share of cargo transport, are the silent giants behind global trade and major CO₂ contributors. But what if they could be cleaner—and powered by science? Engineers are developing new solutions: wind-powered ships, low-emission engines, and smarter logistics. Can we redesign global logistics for a greener future? What will it take to make cargo transport truly sustainable—and how close are we to that future?
On Tuesday, September 23, Science Café Nijmegen explores the latest innovations in cargo transport (discussion in Dutch) with two experts: Tijs Donkers (TU/e), associate professor of control systems, specializing in vehicle energy management and optimizing the use of batteries and combustion engines; and Albert Rijkens (TU Delft), program manager of Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP), a research initiative harnessing wind power to reduce fuel use of cargo ships. Together, they will shed light on how science and technology are rethinking global trade.
Sound artist Oliv Oliv (Olivier Terpstra) will set the tone for this futuristic evening, brewing immersive electronic soundscapes.
