About this Event

Join best selling author Holly Webb to hear about her brand new book for readers age 9+, A Girl's Guide to Spying. In this thrilling interactive event you'll explore the murky world of spycraft and secret codes set against the amazing true story of the Girl Guides working undercover for MI5 in WW1!

Did you know that the Girl Guides worked undercover for MI5 during the First World War?

When Phyl is dragged along to the Girl Guides by her younger sister, Annie, the last thing she expects is the adventure of a lifetime. Then her Guide captain offers her a job as a messenger for MI5. Phyl is desperate to help the war effort and is thrilled to be working with spies.

But she can’t seem to do anything right in the eyes of the grumpy Major Warren. When he suddenly disappears, Phyl and Annie suspect that he may in fact be a double agent. The two sisters must solve the mystery of his whereabouts, before it’s too late. Luckily their friends from the Rose Patrol are ready to help…

Holly Webb started writing while she was working as an editor at a children’s publisher and is now one of Britain’s best-loved children’s authors. Her books have been translated into 33 languages and sold going on for 2 million copies. Holly joined the Brownies aged 7, and still volunteers as a Brownie and Guide Leader. Holly lives in Reading with her husband, three children and two cats.

Did you know that 2026 is the National Year of Reading? A Department for Education initiative, in collaboration with The National Literacy Trust, the campaign aims to tackle the profound decline in reading enjoyment in the UK and reconnect people of all ages with reading as a relevant and immediately rewarding activity. Our children’s gala is one of the ways in which we are helping to encourage a love of reading! Find out more at National Year of Reading 2026 | National Literacy Trust
