About this Event
Volcanoes National Park, on the Big Island of Hawaii, is home to Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. The park encompasses over 500 square miles, and includes the recently active Mauna Loa, which itself is the world’s largest shield volcano. In addition to viewing ongoing Kilauea eruption events, other easily assessable attractions include numerous craters and cinder cones, a lava tube you can walk through, steam vents, evidence of recent lava flows, active ground subsidence that destroys highways, and ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs. This presentation will show many of these features from a 2022 visit, both on the ground and from the air. Many of the rocks you will see are younger than you are, which is a rarity in geologic field trips!
