This segement of the African Landing Commemoration Symposium is moderated by Traci DeShazor, Virginia Commonwealth Secretary of the Administration, the Freedom Forward Fireside Chat is an intimate, thought-provoking conversation designed to explore the enduring questions at the heart of the American experiment. What does freedom mean? Who gets to define it and participate? How do we build a future worthy of our shared history?
Shannon Lanier, a direct descendant of President Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, brings a unique perspective on ancestry, identity, reconciliation, and the complexities of America’s founding ideals. This conversation invites audiences to wrestle with the paradoxes of slavery and freedom while imagining a more just present and future rooted in truth, shared humanity, and civic responsibility.
