Local Filmmakers to Premiere World War-Themed Documentary "A Final Landing on Iwo Jima" at Fort Myers Film Festival
FORT MYERS, FL: On May 25th at 10:45 am, local filmmakers will debut their highly anticipated WWII-themed documentary, "A Final Landing on Iwo Jima," at the Fort Myers Film Festival. The premiere will take place at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center.
The focus of this one-hour documentary is the remarkable modern-day return to Iwo Jima by a 100-year-old Marine veteran who was wounded during the intense fighting on the island in 1945. Additionally, the film follows the journey of the son of another Marine, as he endeavors to unravel the mysteries of his father's World War II experiences. Despite his father's silence about the brutal combat he witnessed on Iwo Jima, the son is determined to gain insight into this pivotal chapter of his family history.
Written and directed by Tim Gray, president of the WWII Foundation and former WINK-TV sports director, "A Final Landing on Iwo Jima" boasts a stellar production team. Producer and editor Dave C Beaty, alongside cinematographer John Paluzzi, both former WINK news alums, bring their expertise to the project. The film is narrated by renowned CBS sports commentator Jim Nantz.
In March of 2023, the documentary crew embarked on an extraordinary journey to the remote Japanese island of Iwo Jima, now known as Iwo To, capturing poignant moments on the famous black sand beaches. Their travels spanned over 8,000 miles from the United States to the remote island in the West Pacific.
SW Florida is recognized as one of the state's many veteran-friendly communities and the state is home to over 1 million of our nation's veterans. The WWII Foundation, under the leadership of Tim Gray, has produced over 30 films chronicling the heroic deeds of our nation's greatest generation, preserving their legacy for future generations. Gray, and Beaty are both recipients of multiple Regional Emmy Awards for documentary films, and the World War II Foundation and Tim Gray Media have been honored with American Public Television's esteemed National Programming Excellence Award.
