This introductory workshop explores Sandtray Play Therapy, an expressive therapeutic modality that interweaves sensory and symbolic experiences. Language, discussion and talk therapy can often fall short of helping clients process painful experiences, especially those that exist in areas of the brain and body outside of conscious awareness. Sandtray Play Therapy helps clients access these areas and tap into the wisdom of the body. Using sand, water, a container, and miniature figures clients are provided the opportunity to explore psychological material without the pressure of words. Sandtray Play Therapy is an addition to psychotherapy that is suitable for use with children, adolescents, and adults. Through interactive discussion and experiential exercises, participants will begin to develop basic skills to facilitate this modality. The small group setting is conducive to open discussion and allows participants to ask questions.
This workshop aims to help participants: 1) Explore the origins of Sandtray Play Therapy and justifications for its therapeutic use. 2) Describe the differences between Sandplay Therapy and Sandtray Play Therapy 3) Explain how to create a Sandtray Play Therapy set up in a clinical space. 4) Describe the process of a Sandtray Play Therapy session from introduction to completion. 5) Experience Sandtray Play Therapy techniques suitable for children, adolescents and adults. 6) Identify ethical considerations and standards for ongoing training.
