Now we've got a 'home' at OT301 and a regular date to meet (the first Sunday of each month) we were too excited to delay our next discussion!Given there's not so much time between our upcoming two events, we have chosen a relatively short text which is also easily available online. We'll be reading and discussing A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century by Donna Haraway.
A Cyborg Manifesto was first published in 1985 as an article in the US magazine Socialist Review. Reading this text, we'll encounter the figure of the cyborg posited as a challenge to essentialist politics. Since its publication, this text has come to be considered seminal for its mapping of feminism, science, and technology interactions.
"Donna Haraway criticizes traditional notions of feminism, particularly its emphasis on identity rather than affinity. She uses the metaphor of a cyborg in order to construct postmodern feminism that moves beyond dualisms and the limitations of traditional gender, feminism, and politics".
