A Critical Year for SF Public Schools

Families, students, teachers – get ready for 2025. It’ll be the most consequential year for San Francisco public schools in memory. The district is under pressure to cut about 10% of its $1.3 billion budget. Enrollment is in decline. A failed attempt to close nearly a dozen schools just cost the district’s boss his job.

In 2025, the new superintendent Maria Su must also navigate budget negotiations with the teachers union, ongoing academic reforms, a new elementary assignment system, and potentially Trump immigration policies that target SF. All that, and the school closure fight isn’t necessarily over. 

Join The Frisc education reporter Ida Mojadad, incoming school board member Jamie Huling, and teachers union president Cassondra Curiel on Thursday, Jan. 9 for a wide-ranging discussion about the state of our schools – and what comes next.  

Who’s speaking: 

Cassondra Curiel, president of the United Educators Of San Francisco. Curiel has been the head of SF’s teachers union, with about 6,000 members, since 2021. 

Jaime Huling, SF Board of Education member-elect, veteran city attorney, and district parent. Huling was the top vote-getter in the crowded November 2024 school board election. 

Ida Mojadad, The Frisc’s education reporter. Mojadad has covered SF education, including public schools, since 2018 and has also covered housing, transportation, and immigration.
