The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) is thrilled to present “Silver Linings,” a writing workshop, instructed by Debra Kirschner. Kirschner was a winner of WCDH’s 2021 “Humor Me” fellowship, open to poets, fiction writers, playwrights, essayists, columnists, memoirists, and screenwriters who use humor as a key element in their work. While the humor could range from wry to screwball, the work needed to demonstrate literary merit and the promise of publication, or in the case of theater and film, production. Kirschner was one of two winners selected from 58 applications received from writers across the US. During her two-week residency, she will be putting the final touches on her comedic screenplay, Mallwalkers. Set in post-COVID America, it’s about the resilience of seniors through unparalleled challenges. The film’s protagonist becomes a hero at 70 in stereotype-busting ways.
The workshop will be on Saturday, August 7, from 10:00 am to noon CDT. The standard workshop fee for the class is $50 per person. The deluxe workshop fee is $200 and includes Friday and Saturday evening lodging at the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow. The deluxe rate is based on single occupancy, depends on suite availability, and includes food from a well-stocked community kitchen. A European-Style Gourmet dinner will be served on Friday evening. Attendees may reserve additional consecutive residency nights at the subsidized rate of $75 per night.

The “Silver Linings” will workshop will guide writers to use their life experiences as inspiration for either memoir-style essays or fictional narratives, or a hybrid of both. Creative writing exercises will be designed specifically to find the humor in painful situations. Attendees will have the opportunity to share their work in a supportive setting, but it will not be a requirement.

This workshop is open to older writers of all levels. It’s especially appropriate for seniors who want to share fun and positive stories about themselves. WCDH will continue to maintain COVID protocols, adjusted according to the current mandates and the state of the pandemic. These protocols will be communicated to workshop registrants the week prior to the workshop.

Participants should bring their preferred writing medium and a sense of humor. This is sure to be an entertaining, inspiring, and informative class. The workshop is limited to 10 attendees, so register early by visiting https://www.writerscolony.org/events, or calling 479-253-7444.
