Join Bay Area artist Hector Dionicio Mendoza for an evening celebrating Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month. Creando Espacio, Mendoza’s latest art installation on Montalvo's grounds, will be the launching point for music, conversation, workshops, food, art, and more!
Creando Espacio is a participatory art installation created by Mendoza in collaboration with Amalia Mesa-Bains and Viviana Paredes. It draws on Mendoza’s childhood memories of his grandfather’s healing space in Mexico and serves as a meditative environment to reflect on experiences of migration, community, placemaking, and family ritual. Mendoza will be on site to collect stories for the project, share experiences of becoming an artist in California, and discuss what anchors him in his creative practice. He will be joined by collaborators and colleagues for a Q&A session, and young artists will have an opportunity to network and build community together. Montalvo will also announce a new Administration Fellowship for Latinx students.
This is an opportunity to gather and celebrate our local Latinx Heritage. Throughout the event, you'll hear live music and performances, have a chance to get creative with CSUMB Visual & Public Art's mobile screen-printing unit, taste some delicious food, and – of course – play piñata games. Don’t miss this fun evening of culture and community!
Creando Espacio was made possible in part by a grant from The Creative Work Fund, a program of the Walter and Elise Haas Fund that also is supported by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Program supported with generous funds from Applied Materials.
