Sara’s bravery and determination were pivotal in exposing the Rochdale child grooming scandal, leading to the conviction of nine men and uncovering systemic failures that had allowed the abuse to continue. Her story, powerfully portrayed by Maxine Peake in the BBC drama ThreeGirls, shines a light on the strength it takes to speak truth to power.

As the former coordinator of Rochdale’s Crisis Intervention Team, Sara worked tirelessly to support vulnerable young people. Despite her relentless efforts to alert authorities, her warnings went unheeded for years. Undeterred, she gathered evidence and stood firm, even in the face of institutional indifference and personal hardship. Her courage and determination ultimately helped secure justice for survivors and exposed the urgent need for systemic change.

Despite being made redundant from her role in 2014, Sara has continued to lead with purpose, becoming a councillor in Rochdale where she has represented the North Middleton ward since 2015. Her journey is a testament to resilience, showing how leaders can rise above adversity and continue to fight for what matters.

In May 2017, Sara appeared on the Channel 4 programme First Dates, where she candidly discussed her experiences in exposing the Rochdale child grooming scandal. During the episode, she expressed a desire to move forward and "live [her] life again," highlighting the personal toll of her advocacy work. This appearance offered viewers a glimpse into the emotional challenges faced by those who confront systemic injustices.

Her dedication and impact were acknowledged in 2018, when she received a Special Recognition Award at the NHS Heroes Awards. Later that year, she was honoured as an honorary member of the Council of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), recognising her unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable young people. In 2021, Sara was awarded an MBE for services to young people, cementing her legacy as a courageous and inspirational leader.

Sara’s experiences as an openly gay leader add a powerful dimension to her story, offering inspiration to LGBT+ leaders navigating their own paths. Her journey highlights the importance of authenticity, courage, and staying true to your values in the face of adversity. This event will provide a unique opportunity for LGBT+ leaders to explore how their own identities and experiences can shape their leadership style, create meaningful change, and build stronger, more inclusive communities.

Whether you’re a leader, advocate, or someone seeking inspiration, this event will provide valuable insights into the power of courageous leadership.
