A Conversation featuring Tatiana Akoeva and Helena Poto

Join in the conversation on the exhibits titled “Real and imaginary” by Tatiana Akoeva and "Fruitscapes and Flowerscapes" by Helena Poto on Thursday, April 17th at 5:30pm. Tatiana Akoeva is a Russian-born artist working in the realm of figurative art. Her work combines perceptual and painterly ways in a realistic approach to contemporary painting. Akoeva’s fluent artistic vocabulary includes gestural brushstrokes with the color palette of impressionism. In her paintings, color signifies meaning and emotion. Having a film background, she uses cinematic imagery in some of her paintings. Drawing inspiration from iconic films of neorealism she pays homage to cinematic history while recontextualizing these references. Akoeva is renowned for painting portraits. When she works from nature, she does it from direct observation. Akoeva works primarily in oils.

Helena Poto has been painting since she was four year’s old and received her first “Best in Show” at age seven. She has sculpted, created watercolors, prints, pastels, and pencil drawings but painting is her central practice.

Poto is inspired by the architecture within the everyday. Whatever the subject is; be it a flower, a fruit, a rose, or a face, she creates a composition drawing inspiration from the natural angles, curves and shapes. She attempts to direct the viewer to see another layer of existence in an ordinary object or subject, the possibility of life with a deeper meaning. In her composition, she removes superfluous exterior influences to the core of the object or subject.
